The Boys & Girls Clubs of Elko was founded in 1999 by Al Bernarda. We serve the communities of Elko, Carlin, Wells, Owyhee, and Spring Creek. Our service area includes Elko County with a population of just over 50,000 people. The Boys & Girls Clubs of Elko serves children from 5-18 years of age. Our Club serves the children who need us most, with 48% of our Club members falling below the poverty line.
The Boys & Girls Clubs of Elko operated out of trailers, located at the Southside Elementary School, for the first twelve years of operation. The successes established during these early years set the foundation for a strong future.
The Boys & Girls Clubs of Elko secured $4,000,000 for a new 17,200 square foot “Club” that opened its doors in August 2013 which moved our organization from serving 550 members in 2012, to over 1,200 members in 2018.
In September 2018 the Boys & Girls Clubs of Elko received a donation of $878,000 from the William N. Pennington Foundation to build a new Teen Center. In October 2019, this new Teen Center opened its doors to make space for 200 members age 12-18. The Teen Center offers 22 computers, 12 video game stations, six game tables, and a weight room with five cardio machines, dumbbells, and cross-cables.
The Boys & Girls Clubs of Elko provides support to young people that is significant but distinguishable from what they get elsewhere--at home, in school, in church, in other private agencies or in public recreation. The Club is a positive place offering all kinds of educational, recreational and social activities. Caring, trained youth development staff provide guidance to assist boys and girls discover their needs, pursue interests, nurture talents, broaden viewpoints, dissolve prejudices, resolve conflicts, set goals, understand themselves and have fun!
